Future Self-Identification Scale: Adaptation into Turkish, Validity and Reliability Study

Abstract

The Future Self-Identification Scale (FSIS) is a measurement tool developed to understand why individuals perceive a sense of disconnection between their present and future selves. The present study aimed to adapt the FSIS into Turkish and to examine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version. The scale was translated into Turkish, and its validity and reliability were evaluated across two independent studies. In Study 1, data were collected from 313 participants through an online survey, and the construct validity of the scale was assessed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). For criterion validity, the Sense of Coherence Scale (Antonovsky, 1987) was employed, and the relationships between the two measures were examined. Results revealed that the Turkish version of the FSIS consisted of three subdimensions—relatedness, vividness, and positivity—each represented by two items, replicating the original factor structure. The internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach’s alpha) were .74 for relatedness, .72 for vividness, and .74 for positivity. In Study 2, conducted with 296 participants, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the three-factor structure, providing evidence for the construct validity of the scale. Overall, findings indicated that the Turkish version of the FSIS possesses satisfactory reliability and validity values and can be used in future studies examining the relationship between present and future self-concepts

Öz

Gelecekteki Benlik Özdeşimi Ölçeği (GBÖÖ) kişilerin şimdiki ve gelecekteki benlikleri arasında neden algılanan bir kopukluk olduğunu anlamaya yönelik olarak geliştirilmiş bir ölçüm aracıdır. Mevcut çalışmanın amacı, gelecekteki benlik özdeşimi ölçeğini Türkçeye uyarlamaktır. Çalışma kapsamında gelecekteki benlik özdeşimi ölçeyi Türkçeye çevrilmiş ve Türkçe versiyonun psikometrik özellikleri incelenmiştir. Ölçeğin psikometrik özellikleri iki ayrı çalışma ile değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışma 1 kapsamında 313 kişiden web anket aracılığıyla veri toplanmış, ölçeğin yapı geçerliği açımlayıcı faktör analizi ile incelenmiştir. Ölçüt-bağıntı geçerliği için Antonovsky’nin (1987) geliştirdiği Bireysel Bütünlük Duygusu Ölçeği kullanılmış ve iki ölçek arasındaki ilişkiler incelenmiştir. Türkçe Gelecekteki Benlik Özdeşimi Ölçeği’nin ilişkisellik (relatedness), canlılık (vividness) ve olumluluk (positivity) olmak üzere her biri 2 madde içeren 3 alt boyuttan oluştuğu gözlenmiş, böylece orijinal faktör yapısı bu çalışmada da tekrarlanmıştır. Ölçeğin iç tutarlık Cronbach alfa katsayıları sırasıyla ilişkisellik .74, canlılık .72 ve olumluluk alt boyutu için .74 olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma 2 ise 296 birey ile gerçekleştirilmiş ve ölçeğin yapı geçerliliği kapsamında doğrulayıcı faktör analizi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bulgular ölçeğin tatmin edici güvenirlik ve geçerlik değerlerine sahip olduğunu ve şimdiki ve gelecekteki benlik arasındaki ilişkiyi ele almak amacıyla izleyen araştırmalarda kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir.
