THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MOUNTAINOUS KARABAKH CONFLICT IN WORLD POLITICS
Abstract
The mountainous Karabakh region is part of the Republic of Azerbaijan according to international law which has been reaffirmed by United Nations Security Council resolutions 822, 853 and 874. These resolutions have approved Azerbaijani territorial integrity and inviolability of international borders and unequivocally stated that the Nagorno-Karabakh region is under Azerbaijani sovereignty but as realist international relations theory envisaged, force is the ultimate arbiter of conflicts between nations and in this case Karabakh Armenians together with Armenia proper and with Russian assistance defeated Azerbaijan and ethnically cleansed Karabakh. This conflict can be analyzed from the framework of “one land two peoples”, a state of affairs in which two nationalist claims clash over the same piece of territory. While legality is on the side of Azerbaijanis, Armenians were victorious due to their superior military power thanks to Russian involvement on their side.
