Zero-Distance Mobility and the Transformation of Transport Through Teleportation

Abstract

Throughout two centuries, improvements in transport systems have occurred through the balancing act between mass, speed and infrastructure. Teleportation, which is understood here as the imaginary instant relocation of physical matter, has been peripheral to transport research due to the ability to upset the existing paradigm of trade-offs in transport. In this paper, teleportation is reconceptualised as a structured future scenario based on quantum information theory, futures studies and research on transport and logistics. A new Zero-Distance Mobility Framework is developed including six dimensions, four effects from mechanisms and eight theoretical propositions. The scenario development uses an example of General Morphological Analysis along with a four-layered Causal Layered Analysis. Using five parameters: technological maturity, governance structure, energy infrastructure, scope of application and social acceptance, four archetypal scenarios have been constructed: centrally organised matter transfer, teleported economy, gradual hybrid transport system and postponed future. It is suggested that, if the underlying technology becomes mature, teleportation will revolutionise land use in cities, last-mile logistics, international supply chains, transport modes and employment markets. However, such revolution will not be linear and will be dictated by regulation, political power, energy infrastructure and social acceptance. The paper ends with the recommendations about early warning signals and strategic triggers for transport planners, policy makers and logistics decision-makers in anticipation of this remote transport future.
