Prof. Dr. Gulbeyaz Can was born in Kardzhali, Bulgaria, in 1971 and completed her elementary, middle and high school education in that country. She started her nursing education at Florence Nightingale School of Nursing, Istanbul University in 1989 and graduated in 1993. Between 1993 and 1995, she worked as a nurse in the Intensive Care Unit of the Cardiology Institute of Istanbul University. She started her academic career in 1995 at Cerrahpaşa Florence Nightingale Nursing Faculty of Istanbul University in the Department of Internal Medicine and still works as a department head in the same department. She is actively involved in the education of nursing students at this faculty. In addition to her academic activities, between 2005 and 2018, she informed chemotherapy patients and their families about the side effects of treatment and helped them cope with them.
Between 2005 and 2010, she served as a board member of the National Cancer Advisory Board of the Ministry of Health, representing oncology nurses. Between 2009 and 2010, she participated as a member of the Palliative Care Subcommittee in three workshops of the Cancer Control Division of the Ministry of Health and played an active role in setting standards for palliative care.
She has numerous national and international publications. The focus of her work is evidence-based care for cancer patients. In the last 10 years, 7 oncology nursing consensus conferences have been held with approximately 2400 nurses attending to address this topic. His work aimed to establish important nursing standards for the care of oncology patients.
For his contributions to oncology nursing, Prof. Dr. Gulbeyaz Can was awarded the Leman Birol Award by the Oncology Nursing Association in 2005 and the International Award for Contributions in Cancer Care by ONS in 2018.
