Life Experiences of Individuals with COPD During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Study

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the lived experience of COPD patients during COVID-19 pandemics.
Method: A phenomenological study was conducted with 11 patients hospitalized due to COPD in the Internal Medicine department of a university hospital. We selected the participants based on purposeful sampling. The data were collected by semi-structured interviews and continued till the saturation of data. Interviews were conducted via telephone after discharging and recorded with a digital voice recorder. Then, the recorded sounds were transcribed verbatim and analyzed by the content analysis method.
Results: Four main themes emerged as symptoms, functional status, fear, and measures. The patients stated that their lives were negatively affected, that they had limitations in their daily activities. They had respiratory distress as the most important symptom. They expressed concerns about COVID-19 transmission and had fear of death, did not leave the house, and took precautions in their way.
Conclusion and Suggestions: Our result confirmed that COPD patients experienced complex problems such as social isolation, daily activities limitation, and changes in their emotional, cognitive, and economic status. The results of the study can be useful for health care providers to help COPD patients to improve their quality of life by supporting and encouraging them to adapt to this stessful situation based on their lived experiences.

COVID-19 Pandemi Sürecinde KOAH Olan Bireylerin Yaşam Deneyimleri: Nitel Bir Çalışma

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışma, Kronik Obstrüktif Akciğer Hastalığının hastaların yaşamını nasıl etkilediğini ve pandemi sürecinin yaşamlarında ne gibi değişiklikler oluşturduğunu hastaların bakış açısıyla ortaya koymak amacıyla planlanmıştır.
Yöntem: Fenomonolojik nitelikteki araştırma, 15 Eylül 2020 – 15 Mart 2021 tarihleri arasında bir üniversite hastanesinin İç Hastalıkları kliniğinde Kronik Obstrüktif Akciğer Hastalığı tanısı ile yatan 11 hasta ile yapılmıştır. Veriler Birey Tanılama Formu ve Yarı Yapılandırılmış Görüşme Formu kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden hastalardan onamları alınmış ve görüşmeler (ort: 26 dk) pandemi nedeniyle taburculuk sonrası telefon aracılığı ile gerçekleştirilmiş, dijital ses kayıt cihazı ile kaydedilmiştir. Yazılı döküm haline getirilen veriler kodlanıp temalara göre sınıflandırılmış, verilerin değerlendirilmesinde içerik analizi (content analysis) yöntemi kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Araştırma sonucunda semptomlar, fonksiyonel durum, korku ve önlemler olmak üzere dört ana tema belirlenmiştir. Hastalar yaşamlarının olumsuz etkilendiğini, günlük yaşam aktivitelerinde sınırlılık ve en önemli semptom olarak solunum sıkıntısı yaşadıklarını, COVID-19 bulaşmasına ilişkin kaygılarının olduğunu ve ölüm korkusu yaşadıklarını, evden çıkmadıklarını, aşı yaptıracaklarını ve kendilerince önlemlerini aldıklarını belirtmişlerdir.
Sonuç ve Öneriler: Pandemi sürecinde hastaların bakış açısından deneyimlerini anlamak sağlık profesyonelleri için önemlidir. Kronik Obstrüktif Akciğer Hastalığı, özellikle bu süreç içerisinde hastaların yaşamlarının her alanında önemli kısıtlılıklar ve duygusal değişimler yaşamalarına neden olmaktadır. Özellikli bir grup olan KOAH hastalarına pandemi sürecine uyum sağlayabilmeleri için destek verilmeli ve cesaretlendirilmelidir. Çalışma sonuçları kişiye özel bakım yaklaşımlarının geliştirilmesini sağlaması açısından önemlidir.
