Abstract
In this study, Anthony Kenny’s The Unknown God: Agnostic Essays was introduced as content. Some evaluations were made in the context of Feridüddin Attâr’s Mantıku't-Tayr:Kuş Dili. In his work The Unknown God, Kenny examines the ineffability of God, his conceivability, whether mind can be attributed to God, the limits of anthropomorphism, the relationship between the problem of evil and the argument of design, the concepts of metaphor, analogy, faith, pride and humility. Based on these concepts, he adopts agnosticism in the context of criticism of Christianity from time to time. Moreover, he draws on the ideas of Saint Anselm, Arthur Hugh Clough, John Henry Newman, Leslie Stephen, Ludwig Wittgenstein to ground his ideas.
At first, although it seems that there could not be a connection between Attâr, who lived about 800 years before him, in this study, the ideas of the philosophers were compared, since both philosophers dealt with the issue of knowing God in their works in a way that would constitute a material for the philosophy of religion. Of course, while Kenny approaches the issue as a philosopher and evaluates the event on the basis of reason, Attâr defends that the heart or soul should also be involved in addition to the mind, by handling the language of religion with poetry and metaphor, just as Kenny suggests. This shows us that there were alternative solutions to the issue, which is the subject of discussion even today, hundreds of years ago. Perhaps Attâr’s proposal will open new doors for many different thinkers, especially Kenny.

Bu çalışmada Anthony Kenny’nin The Unknown God: Agnostic Essays isimli eseri içerik olarak tanıtıldı. Feridüddin Attâr’ın Mantıku’t-Tayr: Kuş Dili eseri bağlamında bazı değerlendirmeler yapıldı. Kenny, The Unknown God isimli eserinde Tanrı’nın tarif edilmezliği, rasyonelliğini, Tanrı’ya zihin atıf edilip edilemeyeceğini, antropomorfizmin sınırlarını, kötülük problemi ve tasarım delili ilişkisini, mecaz, kıyas, inanç, kibir ve tevazu kavramlarını inceler. Bu kavramlardan yola çıkarak yer yer Hıristiyanlık eleştirisi bağlamında agnostisizmi benimser. Dahası fikirlerini temellendirmek için St. Anselm, Arthur Hugh Clough, John Henry Newman, Leslie Stephen, Ludwig Wittgenstein’ın fikirlerinden beslenir.
İlk başta kendisinden yaklaşık 800 yıl önce yaşamış Attâr ile aralarında bağlantı kurulamayacak gibi gözükse de iki düşünür de söz konusu eserlerinde Tanrı’nın bilinmesi meselesini din felsefesine malzeme teşkil edecek şekilde ele aldıkları için bu çalışmada düşünürlerin fikirleri kıyaslandı. Elbette ki Kenny, meseleye bir filozof olarak yaklaşmakta akıl temelinde olayı değerlendirmekte iken Attâr, aklın yanı sıra gönül ya da kalbin de işin içine katılması gerektiğini tam da Kenny’nin önerdiği tarzda din dilini şiir ve mecazla ele alarak savunmaktadır. Bu da özellikle günümüzde dahi tartışma konusu edilen meseleye aslında yüzlerce yıl öncesinde alternatif çözüm önerileri olduğunu bizlere göstermektedir. Belki de Attâr’ın önerisi, başta Kenny olmak üzere birçok farklı düşünüre de bu konuda yeni kapılar açacaktır.
